Sepia Saturday 187; old books;

Before the PC arrived,
there were books nothing but books;

Before PC's there were just books to learn from, like these old, leather bound books for electrical Engineers.

I have learned to read at an early age  and since then I have been fascinated by books. Both these old books have shaped my life. They were already old when they found their way into my bookshelf.
The one on the left is bound into fine, soft suede, which shows now  bad signs of old age. It is an encyclopaedia which was full of knowledge for a hungry child. The other a very old book about biology, botany which opened up my love and interest in plants at an early age.

Encyclopaedia;

Botany;

...for more old books or such...

  1. Hmmm...these remind me of the Arthur Mee encyclopaedias I used to love. And Black's Medical Dictionary - which was scary.

  3. I've got several old dictionaries. It's fun to see what words are added through the years; also how the meanings shift...

  4. Books are very important. As a first grade teacher I was always looking for new ways to excite my class about books. They take you anywhere & everywhere!

  5. I love old books! And my comic book reading always sent me to the encyclopedias to find out more about various subjects.

  6. I'm resisting throwing old books away especially out of date encyclopedias. They still contain information not it more recent ones. Hang on to yours.

  7. I fear that my grandchildren won't revere books as much as I do, but the written word still grabs them, albeit on a Kindle, a Nook, or their computers. So different.

  8. Great old books you have there. No wonder you know so much about plants.

  9. I had a set of encyclopedias as a kid too -- World Book. We bought a set for our daughters just before the Internet became THE thing. I don't think they every opened those books to do a class project.

  10. And of course books often yield secret little messages and drawings from a granddaughter.

    1. Marilyn, yes it's a good idea to tuck little messages into books.

  12. I volunteer at our library's used book store. People are always donating old encyclopedias and if they're too old, they just get thrown away. I'd like to save them all!
