Sepia Saturday 160;

A horse a horse my Kingdom for a horse!

A few things are happening in the background here at the Praco do Comercio in Lisbon in the Year of 1777
most of them not as significant as  the announcement  in the Portugal daily view,  that King Jose the first  wants to trade his Kingdom for a horse...before he died !!

    1. Karen that's right. There is this story about a Chinese horse trader. A man came by to look at the horses and saw one he really liked. He asked the trader how much is the horse over there with the white spots? The Chinese horse trader said:"not for sale it not lookee so good." the buyer said:"it is so very pretty, I want to buy it". OK, you insist, but it does not lookee so good. The buyer paid 100$ took the horse, got up on it and rode away. A little later he returned with a bloody nose and with a raised voice he said to the trader:" You have sold me a blind horse it ran into the next tree, I want my money back". The trader said:" no money back I told you It not lookee so good"!
      Karen, did you mean a horse not lookee so good?!

  4. Sorry, first comment deleted by mistake.

    A Stunning subject, when I drew my eyes away, I was taken by the Old gent with three legs sitting on the steps. Enlargement, however, showed a partner. The young man to the right; is he drunk or is he studying the insect life of Lisbon?

    As I'd never heard of Jose 1, I looked him up. It seems that he largely left his Kingly duties to the Maquis do Pombal whilst he indulged his passions for Hunting and the Opera.

    During his reign Lisbon was largely destroyed by an earthquake and Tsunami that followed. The Praco do Comercio was built as part of the reconstruction of the City.

    1. Yes, he liked hunting that is why I tweaked the story, a horse a horse my kingdom for a horse!! I thought W. Shakespeare would be rather pleased with the turn his play took in 2013. Thanks for your diligence.

  6. It was only when I opened the shot up and enlarged it did I appreciate the great detail and the host of different stories taking place. Great Sepia Saturday post.

  7. One of my favorite subjects in pictures of important cities in Europe is the "town square."

  8. Enlarging the picture reveals a very haughty glance of José I.
    @Mike, I am glad you deleted your first comment because I very much enjoyed the second one!

  9. Well, I hope that they thwarted the King's plans ... no leader should be able to trade away a whole country for personal desires. I don't think so anyway.

    Tatania, this photo is wonderful; and talk about stuff going on in the background ... but it is of you too, isn't it? Very pretty!
