Sepia Saturday; 11/03/2016 The Kiss;

The Kiss; by Gustav Klimt, painted  between 1907 and 1908. It was the high point of his "Golden Period". He was doing well when he painted works in a similar gilded style. He embraced the constructs of the contemporary Art Nouveau style, the organic forms of the earlier Arts and Crafts movement. The work is composed of oil paint with applied layers of gold leaf, an aspect that gives it its strikingly modern, yet evocative appearance. The Kiss, a masterpiece of the early modern period. It is a symbol of Vienna Jugendstil—Viennese Art Nouveau—

  1. I've seen the original Kiss painting in the Belvedere Palace in Vienna and it is spectacular.

    1. Yes, it is. I am glad it is in the Belvedere for all to admire, not hidden in a private vault.

  3. The Kiss is just stunning...funny how just the right amount of gold leaf can lift a painting and the observer...

  4. I did a jigsaw puzzle of the Kiss...an official one sold when the painting was touring in the U.S. I came to love it piece by piece and then was blown away when I got to see the whole real thing in Vienna. Looking at these kisses makes me feel good...almost good as getting a kiss myself. There must some psychological benefit even in simply witnessing affection between people or animals or people and animals.

    1. Yes, it is a spectacular painting; I love the "Jugendstil" generally without frills, the gold is ingenious. Kisses and hugs the ultimate gestures in friendship and good will, must have a psychological benefit. Did you frame the puzzle? It hides thoughts, laughter and more in its puzzled picture.

  5. A nice cross-section of kisses. The painting is beautiful, & the kids are cute. But my favorite is the couple stealing a kiss before the train leaves the station. Her white shoes make me think she might have been a nurse?

    1. Sometimes, important art is exhibited as loan in different countries. Many years back Van Gogh was visiting Brisbane and later some others.

    1. Kathy, it is a Budgie. His name was Bobby and he was a great talker, free to fly around in the house.

  9. The Kilmpt is one of my favorite paintings, but I'd never seen it with so much blank space on the sides...all the prints I've seen have it as a long narrow painting.

    1. Barbara Rogers, The Kiss painting is 1.8 m x 1.8 m, a big square. 1.8 m = around 70.87 inches.

  10. I am afraid that the painting doesn't do much for me! Maybe in person it would be more impressive in person?
